I had no idea Ford has been doing the key pad door combination thing for so long. My families my’s 93 Sable Wagon had it, but this is almost 10 years earlier. This must have seemed like some swanky futuristic tech in 84.
So why the heck has no other car maker even attempted something similar.

Because it`s so rarely used it`s an unnecessary extra cost.

People rarely opted for them, more rarely used them, and have been basically rendered redundant by keyless entry and Onstar.
Still neat, though.

Because it`s so rarely used
this is utterly and completely false.

Nissan did it on the Maxima in the early 90s:
My friend’s mom had a 92 GLE - pearl white with beige interior - with the door keypad

I use mine all the time. SOP when I go skiing or biking or anything like that is to lock the keys in the truck. That way I don’t have to worry about losing them in weeds.

Then what is the reason?

I read something about that a while ago - apparently it was super popular with a core section of Ford buyers so Ford continued to use it much longer than they had originally planned even after modern key fobs were common. My MIL had it on her Sable and really liked it...

Yup it’s basically standard on all ford And Lincoln models even now. Although now it’s hidden in the black tinted panel on the B pillar. I’d beat most owners don’t even know they have it

Some companies have buyers that like certain odd features while others do not. This happens to be one for Ford. Kind of along the lines of the Rolls Royce door umbrella or Porsche’s odd interior stuff. I know there are other lower end ones but none come to mind.

I don’t know why no one else has done it, I was taking issue with the statement that “it’s so rarely used.” I do know that feedback and usage surveys say that owners with this feature do use it (whether regularly or as an “oh shit” save) and want the feature for their next car.

They’re great for intentionally locking your keys in the car when you go for a run in the park. Also for going to the beach or an amusement park.

Neat. Never noticed it on the 90s gen maximas. A friend of a friend just got a really clean loaded 88 maxima from Copartwith a keypad. I was surprised it was available that long ago too.

Ford has been dead to me since they stopped the door keypad. They did stop it, at least for a while.

Newer cars just have it hidden in the black part of the B pillar.
You can’t see it until you run your finger down it
